March 31, 2001: Warner Park Wildflower Hike

Warner Park Naturalist Deb Beazley led a small group of wildflower enthusiasts on a cool, overcast Saturday for a morning hike on the Mossy Ridge Trail in Percy Warner Park. The group met at the new Warner Nature Center on Highway 100, toured the grounds (where there is a small wildflower garden showing a range of natives and some exotics like Devil's Tongue.)

Deb then drove the group to the Deep Well Picnic area (which puts you at the trailhead of the Mossy Ridge Trail.) In a short up-and-back hike on the trail, we were treated to the sight of Dutchman' Breeches, Trillium cuneatum, Trillium sessile, a couple of early Jack-in-the-Pulpits, Harbinger of Spring, False Rue Anemone, Spice Bush, and Rue Anemone.

Emerging, but not yet in bloom, were Waterleaf, Purple Phacelia, Dwarf Larkspur, and Doll's Eyes (White Baneberry). Both yellow and white Trout Lilies are read to open their blooms--very nice patches of these flowers are found on various sections of this trail.

A knowledgeable and entertaining guide, Deb interspersed stories of Native American lore about the flowers as she identified them. More wildflowers hikes are scheduled at Warner Park this spring.

Sunday, April 1, 2001

A quick trip to Cheekwood's Howe Wildlflower showed the Trout Lilies here are in lovely full bloom. The Celandine Poppies are fully out and a couple of Dutchman's Breeches have their pantaloons hanging on the line.

Next wildflower entry: Monday, April 9
