Calendar of 2006 Hikes & Events

Here's where and when to see wildflowers
in Middle Tennessee and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
 |
09.22.06: Hikes at Percy Warner Park, Beaman, Sewanee, and Land Between the Lakes are scheduled for fall wildflower viewing. See list of hikes below.
09.06.06: The fall wildflower season is about to begin and along with hikes and special events held in the Nashville and Tennessee parks, there are workshops for those interested in gardening and landscaping with native plants. We'll be adding a list of those later today. Meanwhile, check out the nursery-propagated wildflowers you can order online from American Meadows. |
 |
04.14.06: Led by TTU biology professor Ray Jordan, a wildflower walk will be held at Standing Stone State Park tomorrow, April 15, at 10 a.m. This is a splendid location for seeing Shooting Star (Dodecatheon meadia) in bloom. Next Saturday, April 22 will be the Spring Naturalist Rally at Standing Stone and a range of hikes and workshops are scheduled, including nature photography classes, birding expeditions, field sessions on snakes and other reptiles, and, of course, wonderful walks focusing on wildflowers. There's even a butterfly and dragon fly hike. Standing Stone is located near Livingston, TN--about a 100 miles east of Nashville.
The last three weekends have had some spotty weather--cold and raining and fraught with tornodoes at times here in middle Tennessee. But still, the flora has been emerging and beautiful. New photographs from the Natchez Trace, Beaman Park, and Warner Park will be uploaded in the next few days--taken with my new Sony DSC-R1.
03.19.06: The Mossy Ridge Trail in Percy Warner Park is in a showy display of early whites and yellows: cutleaf toothwort, spring beauties, false rue anemone, and lovely banks of Dutchmen's breeches are out. Yellow trout lilies are beginning to bloom, although the bright yellow petals are not yet curled back. The first photo gallery of 2006 wildflower hikes is now up, showing images taken on the Mossy Ridge on Sat., March 18. Also--Sewanee's newsletter from the Herbarium arrived yesterday and the hikes on the University of the South's Perimeter Trail have been added below.
03.18.06: We're adding a link to a splendid online botanical resource. Vanderbilt University biologist Steve Baskauf has compiled an extensive collection of photos and bloom dates of southeastern flora at Bioimages Web.
03.12.06: Wildflower Hikes First Announcement
The first round announcement of wildflower hikes in
Tennesseee is being posted today. Botany excursions
in the Nashville Warner Parks, Beaman Park, and at Cheekwood
are available here and the dates for the big pilgrimage
at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park are posted
here as well. On-line registration for the GSMNP Wildflower
Pilgrimage begins Monday, March 13, 2006 at 9 a.m. EST
(hikes fill up quickly so register early).
We're still waiting on dates for the Cedars of Lebanon
Wildflower Pilgrimage and the program of hikes at Radnor
Lake and the University of the South. Check back to
see a full calendar as we progress in the season.
In addition to the hikes listed here by locale, the
Tennessee
Trails Association has a splendid on-line calendar
of hikes. The Sierra
Club of Tennessee also offers a range of spring hikes,
some which are geared specifically toward wildflower
viewing. South
Cumberland State Park (including the beautiful Savage
Gulf and Collins Gulf areas) host a number of strenuously
stunning wildflower hikes.
Most of the hikes listed here require advance registration.
Dates and times are subject to change, so always call
first for confirmation of particulars. |
